1st Loanhead Company Boys Brigade . The Boys Brigade is a Christian organisation which caters for boys within the age range 6 - 17 years. There are 3 sections, Anchor Boys (6-7 years), Junior Section (8-11 years) and Company/Senior Section (11+ years).
The object of the Boys Brigade is the advancement of Christ's Kingdom among boys and the promotion of habits of Obedience, Reverence, Discipline, Self Respect and all that tends towards a true Christian manliness.
The Loanhead Company encourages these tenets through an award structure leading to the Queen's Award and the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme. Boys are encouraged to participate in a wide variety of activities and competitions at Company, Group, Battalion and National levels.
Anchor Boys meet every Wednesday from September to May, 6pm - 7pm in Loanhead Parish Church Hall. Contact - David Ralston 0131 440 2571.

Air Cadets are a uniformed youth organisation for males and females aged 13 - 17 years. It aims to promote an interest in aviation, both military and civil, and to foster the spirit of Venture Adventure and prepare members for both military or civilian life. The Loanhead Squadron meets in its own headquarters at Burghlee Terrace on Mondays and Thursdays 7pm - 9.30 pm. FRIENDS OF THE PARK
Members of Loanhead CDA
Friends of the Park was formed in 1998. There are currently 4 mothers in the group and new members are welcome. The group’s aim is to transform Burghlee Park into something nicer for all members of the Loanhead community regardless of age and ability.
To date, Friends of the Park has achieved the following:-
1. Planted over 1,500 trees of various species.
2. Installed a nature trail.
3. Installed a ball game.
4. Installed a picnic bench.
5. Installed a snake maze.
6. Created a new network of paths for the nature trail.
7. Installed a wrought iron table with the name Burghlee.
8. Reinstated the avenue (original road) by planting 8 oak trees.
9. Held clean up days.
10. Installed a viewpoint incorporating a blacksmith table with information and a poem from the writer in residence.
11. Installed a large information board with the nature trail.
12. Installed a jetty in the nature trail.
13. Created a BMX track.
The group continues with new projects and seeks to protect the area from development. The group’s work over the years has generated more park users of all age and more wildlife including deer, heron and foxes.

The only Cage Bird Society in Midlothian and has been in existence for over 100 years.
Meetings in Loanhead Miner’s Welfare Club on the last Monday of each month except June, July and December.
The Society has an annual Bird Show in St Margaret’s Hall. This year’s show will be on 7 November 2009. Judges are engaged for each variety and entries come from a wide area of Scotland and England. There is usually an entry of over 600 birds.

The Association organises and runs Loanhead Children’s Day and the associated annual Gala Week. Founded in 1903, this is the oldest and largest local festival in Midlothian with Children’s Day being the highlight of the town’s calendar. Thousands of residents and visitors gather to witness the traditional Crowning Ceremony, the Grand Procession around the town and the afternoon of entertainment in the Memorial Park on Children’s Day. In addition to the Children’s Day, 16 separate events will be staged during the 2009 Gala Week which will commence on Friday 19 June and culminate on the Children’s Day on Saturday 27 June. The Association is also responsible for the annual Christmas Fayre on Fountain Green which coincides with the switch on of the town’s Christmas Lights and the visits of Santa and his sleigh to almost every street in the town immediately before Christmas.

Loanhead Music Festival is a weekend of (mostly) acoustic music held on the 2nd weekend in June. It generally features a concert, an open mic session with competitions, a craft fair and open sessions in the pubs in the town. The Festival attracts visitors from across the UK as well as locally and a campsite is set up adjacent to the Leisure Centre to allow visitors to make the most of the weekend.

Loanhead Twinning Association was set up in 1994 as part of a formal Twin Town link between Loanhead and Harnes, France. Harnes is near Lens, in the Pas de Calais region and, like Loanhead, had an economy largely based on coal. The association encourages individual and family contact between the two towns and each year Harnes sends two youngsters to represent Harnes at the Loanhead Children's Gala Day in June.

The Pentland Hills Chess Club meets at 7:30 p.m. every Tuesday from the beginning of September to the end of June each year, and caters for players of all standards from beginner to strong club players. The club meets in the Loanhead Miners’ Welfare Club, 70-74 The Loan, Loanhead. New members are always welcome.
The Club has around 24 members, runs two club competitions, has teams in Division 1,2,and 3 of the Edinburgh Chess League, one team competing in the Edinburgh Allegro Chess League and one team competing in the Scottish National Chess League. The Club was founded in 1985 and is affiliated to Chess Scotland.
Club membership fees are £45 per year (£22.50 concessions), with new members enjoying a 50% reduction for the first year.
