One of the main purposes of the Association is to campaign for improved facilities for the community in Loanhead. Currently, the Association is involved in organising an audit of Community facilities in Loanhead. Following the recent demolition of Loanhead Town Hall and the consequent loss to the community of the facilities previously provided by that building, Loanhead Community Development Association, acting in conjunction with local Councillors, has agreed to conduct an audit of community facilities in Loanhead. This audit has a number of aims, including:-Identifying all accommodation currently available for use by community groups in Loanhead, including facilities which are currently unused or underused, and making that information available to community groups;Identifying areas where there may be a shortfall in available accommodation (a) to provide accommodation better suited to the needs of existing groups, (b) to provide existing groups, where necessary, with the opportunity to expand both their membership and their activities and (c) to provide accommodation for new groups in the future. The information gathered will assist in creating a strategy to determine what new and additional facilities the community should be seeking in the future.
The Association has also been involved with representatives from Midlothian Council regarding the proposed upgrade of the Memorial Park, we are hopeful funding will be secured soon and the first phase of work started after the Gala Day.

Sessions
The sessions have always been the principal feature of Loanhead Music Festival and you’ll get the chance to play (and drink) with some of the best musicians around. And if you go into a venue and nothing seems to be happening, don’t be shy, just get started. It’s your festival after all. Session venues are the Mason’s Arms lounge bar, the Forresters Arms lounge bar, the Pentland Roadhouse and The Mayflower plus the Session Club in the Ex-Servicemen’s Club on Friday after the concert. (10.30pm approx) till small hours, in the main hall where there’s loads of space.

Workshops
The music workshops are an important element of Loanhead Music Festival and as usual we will offer a wide range of workshops conducted by seasoned players at a very modest cost. This year, the workshops will be held on Saturday 12 in Loanhead Miners Club Lounge. In response to requests, we are running only one workshop at a time. This way, you can do them all, if you want. We hope to be able to offer 1 hour workshops in the following categories:- Slide Guitar, Fingerstyle Guitar, Mandolin, Banjo, Fiddle and Accordion. The workshops can cater for beginners through to advanced levels. You’ll have to provide your own instrument of course. If you are interested in attending any of the workshops, it would greatly help our planning and scheduling if you email loanheadfest@googlemail.com indicating which workshop is of interest and your approximate skill level.

In 2005 the 1st Loanhead Company,Boys’ Brigade joined with the 51st Bonnyrigg and 5th Livingston Companies in wanting to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Boys’ Brigade by reaching outwards to mark this milestone. After some research and a meeting with the Rev.Elaine McKinnon, who had just returned from missionary work in Kenya, we had found the project that required our support.

The Boys’ & Girls Brigades of Oloolua Church,Ngong,Kenya were raising funds to build a nursery school on land next to their Church. They were raising the money by cleaning shoes on the streets of Nairobi which in effect would have taken a lifetime of cleaning to raise the funds required. This is where we stepped in and Project Stedfast was formed.

After initial contacts were made, a small group travelled out to Kenya in November 2006 to visit the site of the proposed school and to meet the people and Church Elders involved. The plan was for a school of three classrooms, toilet block and electrical supply at a total cost of £33,000.A daunting prospect for three companies to undertake, however fundraising began and soon gained momentum. Donations from Lloyds TSB, trust funds, various rotary clubs, local Churches(including great support from Loanhead Parish Church), other BB companies and many individual donations helped the fund surpass it’s initial target. Further visits were made to Kenya to check on the progress of the building work. As the money continued to come in the target was raised to £75,000 to include a further three classrooms and a centre for children with disabilities.

At the beginning of 2009 the total raised was £82,000 with money still coming in.
In February 2009 a group of 44 officers, senior boys and family members travelled out to Kenya for the official opening of St Andrews School and St Andrews Centre for children with disabilities.
Members of the group were given the chance to work as classroom assistants with the children of St Andrews School as well as teaching in the High School nearby.
They also did some landscaping, laying a path round the Church to the School and painting in the disabled centre.

The experience gained by everybody in the group will live with them for ever and having the knowledge that they played a part in changing the lives of the children of Oloolua for the better by giving them the education they seek that will benefit them for the rest of their lives.

Project Stedfast

The fundraising will continue and further visits will be made to Kenya to see the children of St Andrews School.
To everyone who has contributed to Project Stedfast we pass on our sincere gratitude and thanks for without your help this would not have been possible.
For further information on Project Stedfast or if you wish to make a donation, please contact Jim Ralston on 0131 440 0906
